How to count days from a date

Counting forward starts with the day after the start date. Today is day 0, tomorrow is day 1, and so on. That's why 7 days from a Tuesday is the next Tuesday, and any multiple of 7 lands on the same weekday: 14, 21, 28 and 84 days from a Monday are all Mondays. For anything else, it helps to count through the month ends. 45 days from Wednesday, March 3, 2027 uses up the 28 days left in March, then 17 more in April, so the answer is Saturday, April 17, 2027.

Calendar days vs business days

Calendar days count every day, weekends and holidays included. Business days count only Monday to Friday, minus public holidays, so they stretch further. Starting on Wednesday, November 18, 2026, 10 calendar days takes you to Saturday, November 28. Ten business days takes you to Thursday, December 3, because two weekends and Thanksgiving Day are skipped on the way. As a rule of thumb, every 5 business days is one calendar week, and each holiday adds a day.

The weekday count depends on which day you start on, and holidays come off it. The calculator works out the exact figure for your dates.

Inclusive and exclusive counting

Most deadlines leave out the start day. The US Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (Rule 6) spell this out: you exclude the day of the event that starts the period, count every day after it including weekends and holidays, and include the last day. If that last day is a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, the period runs on to the next day that isn't. Other rules count the start day as day 1, which moves the end one day earlier. "Within 30 days" and "30 days including today" can be a day apart, so when it matters, check the wording of the contract, policy or law you're working to.

US federal holidays and UK bank holidays

The US has 11 federal holidays, set by federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103), including Juneteenth since 2021. When one falls on a Saturday, federal workers get the Friday before off; on a Sunday, the Monday after. Private employers choose their own days off, and the Federal Reserve, which sets most bank holidays, stays open on that Friday when a holiday falls on a Saturday. So treat the US calendar here as the federal one, and check your employer's list if it differs.

In the UK, England and Wales have 8 bank holidays a year, Scotland 9 and Northern Ireland 10. A bank holiday that falls on a weekend moves to a substitute weekday. The dates here come from the official GOV.UK list, so one-off holidays such as a coronation are included for the years it covers.

Need to add months or years instead of days? Use the date calculator. To count the days between two dates you already know, use days between dates, or the business days calculator for working days only.

Frequently asked questions

Does "30 days from today" include today?

Usually not. Today is day 0 and tomorrow is day 1, so 30 days from Monday, March 1, 2027 is Wednesday, March 31, 2027. If a rule tells you to count today as the first day, the last day comes one day earlier.

How do I count business days from today?

Turn on "Count business days only". The calculator starts with tomorrow and counts only Monday to Friday, skipping the public holidays of the calendar you choose. 10 business days is two calendar weeks when no holiday gets in the way, and one day more for each holiday.

Is 30 days the same as one month?

Only sometimes. Months have 28 to 31 days, so 30 days from January 31, 2027 is March 2, 2027, while one month from January 31 is February 28. If a contract says "one month", use the date calculator, which adds calendar months.

Which holidays are skipped?

For the US, the 11 federal holidays, using the weekday they are observed on when they fall on a weekend. For the UK, the bank holidays published on GOV.UK for England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. You can also skip weekends only.

What if the date falls on a weekend or holiday?

The calculator tells you, and shows the next business day. Whether a deadline moves depends on the rule behind it. US federal court deadlines, for example, roll forward to the next day that is not a weekend or legal holiday, but a store return window may simply end on the Saturday.

Why does the date only appear after the page loads?

Because it's worked out from today's date on your own device, in your time zone. Nothing is sent to a server, so the answer is right wherever you are.
