180 days vs six months
180 days is 25 weeks and 5 days, which is one to four days short of six calendar months (181 to 184 days). That gap matters for rules written in days. A passport that must be "valid for six months" is counted in months, while the deadlines below are counted in days.
The Schengen 90/180 rule
Visitors to the Schengen area who don't hold a residence permit or long-stay visa can usually stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period. According to the European Commission, the 180 days aren't a fixed block: on every day of your stay, you count back 180 days and add up the days you were in the Schengen area, and the total must not go over 90. The Schengen Borders Code counts the day you arrive and the day you leave as days of stay. Since April 2026, the EU's Entry/Exit System records those entries and exits digitally instead of with passport stamps.
Example: on Wednesday, September 1, 2027, the window covers Saturday, March 6 to September 1, 2027, 179 days back plus the day itself. If you've already spent 90 days in the area inside that window, you can't stay another day until older days drop out of it. Use the Commission's own short-stay calculator for a full check of several trips.
Other 180-day deadlines
- Discrimination charges. The EEOC says you generally have 180 calendar days from the day the discrimination took place to file a charge, or 300 days where a state or local agency enforces a similar law. Weekends and holidays count, but a deadline that falls on one moves to the next business day. From Monday, February 1, 2027, the 180th day is Saturday, July 31, so the charge would be due by Monday, August 2.
- 1031 exchanges. Replacement property must be received within 180 days of selling the old property, or by your tax return due date if that's sooner. A sale on March 15, 2027 gives a deadline of Saturday, September 11, 2027, and the IRS doesn't extend it for weekends.
