90-day probation periods
Many employers start new hires with a 90-day probationary or introductory period. It's common practice, not a legal requirement: in most US states employment is at-will either way, and a probation period doesn't by itself change your rights. What it often changes is when benefits start, when you can take paid time off, or when you get a first review, so it helps to know the exact end date. Check whether your offer letter says 90 days or three months, because the two differ.
Worked example: starting on June 1, 2027
For a job starting Tuesday, June 1, 2027, 90 days later is Monday, August 30, 2027. Three calendar months later would be Wednesday, September 1. If your employer counts your first day as day 1, the 90th day is a day earlier, Sunday, August 29. And if the probation is counted in working days, 90 business days runs to Friday, October 8, 2027, after skipping weekends, Juneteenth (observed Friday, June 18), Independence Day (observed Monday, July 5) and Labor Day.
Quarters, warranties and travel
- Quarters run 90 to 92 days. From Thursday, April 1, 2027, 90 days takes you to Wednesday, June 30, the last day of the second quarter.
- 90-day warranties and return windows on electronics and refurbished goods, usually from the purchase or delivery date.
- Visits to the US on the Visa Waiver Program can last up to 90 days. The Schengen area also allows 90 days, but in any 180-day period, counted on a rolling basis; the 180-day page explains how.
- K-1 visas. USCIS says a fiancé(e) admitted on a K-1 visa must marry the US citizen who petitioned within 90 days of arriving.
