Net 30 and other 30-day terms

"Net 30" on an invoice means the full amount is due 30 calendar days after the invoice date, unless the terms say otherwise. Variations change the starting point: "net 30 EOM" usually means 30 days after the end of the month the invoice is dated in, and "2/10 net 30" offers a 2% discount for paying within 10 days, with the full amount due in 30. Weekends and holidays count, so it's worth knowing whether your customer pays on the due date or the business day before.

Worked example: an invoice dated January 15, 2027

30 days from Friday, January 15, 2027 is Sunday, February 14, 2027. Because the due date is a Sunday, a bank transfer sent that weekend may not clear until Monday, and Monday, February 15 is Presidents' Day, when banks are closed. In practice the money may arrive on Tuesday the 16th. If the terms were 30 business days, the due date would be Tuesday, March 2, 2027, after skipping weekends, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Presidents' Day.

30 days is not one month

Months run from 28 to 31 days, so "30 days" and "one month" often give different dates:

If a contract or lease says "one month", add calendar months with the date calculator instead.

Return windows and notice periods

  • 30-day returns may count from the purchase date or the delivery date. The receipt or the store's policy page says which.
  • 30-day notice to end a month-to-month rental is common in the US, but the length and how it's counted depend on your state and your lease.
  • 30-day free trials often renew automatically at the end. Add the date to your calendar a day or two early.
