Features
Month ends done right
January 31 plus 1 month is February 28 (or February 29 in a leap year). When a day has to move back, the calculator tells you why.
Business days
Count the days part as working days, skipping weekends plus US federal holidays or UK bank holidays.
Add to your calendar
Save the date as an .ics file for Apple Calendar or Outlook, or open it in Google Calendar, in one click.
Weekday, week and day number
Every answer shows the day of the week, the ISO week number and the day of the year.
How the date calculator counts
Adding days is simple arithmetic: every day is the same length. Months and years are not, so the calculator works in a fixed order. It adds the years and months first, then the weeks and days. That's the order people, contracts and most software use, and it matters at the end of a month. Take January 30, 2026 plus 1 month and 2 days:
- Months first (what the calculator does): January 30, 2026 + 1 month = February 28, 2026, then + 2 days = March 2, 2026.
- Days first: January 30, 2026 + 2 days = February 1, 2026, then + 1 month = March 1, 2026.
Weeks are always 7 days, so 6 weeks and 42 days give the same answer. The start date counts as day zero: adding 1 day to a Monday gives Tuesday.
Month ends and leap years
When you add months, the day of the month stays the same if it can. If the new month is too short, the date moves back to its last day. The calculator shows a note whenever this happens, so you know the answer is the last day of the month rather than a mistake. Adding 1 month to the last days of January:
| Start | + 1 month in 2026 | + 1 month in 2028 (leap year) |
|---|---|---|
| January 28 | February 28 | February 28 |
| January 29 | February 28 | February 29 |
| January 30 | February 28 | February 29 |
| January 31 | February 28 | February 29 |
Subtracting works the same way: March 31, 2026 minus 1 month is February 28, 2026. Leap days follow the same rule. A leap year has 366 days, with February 29, and comes every 4 years, except century years that can't be divided by 400 (2000 was a leap year, 2100 won't be). So February 29, 2028 plus 1 year is February 28, 2029, while plus 4 years is February 29, 2032.
Calendar days vs business days
Turn on business days when a deadline is given in working days, like "within 10 business days". The days part then skips Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. From Friday, November 20, 2026, 10 calendar days is November 30, 2026, but 10 business days is December 7, 2026, because the count skips the weekends and Thanksgiving. With the England and Wales calendar, 10 business days from December 18, 2026 is January 6, 2027: Christmas Day, the Boxing Day substitute day on December 28 and New Year's Day are all skipped. The holidays come from the official rules: US federal holidays under 5 U.S.C. 6103 with their observed days, and UK bank holidays from GOV.UK.
What people use it for
- Contract terms and renewals: a 12-month agreement starting January 31, 2026 reaches its anniversary on January 31, 2027. Many contracts end the day before, so check the wording.
- Notice periods and probation: 2 weeks' notice, a 90-day review or a 6-month probation period. Remember that 90 days and 3 months aren't the same.
- Project schedules: add 6 weeks for a phase, then business days for the sign-off.
- Looking back: subtract to find when a 30-day return window or a 1-year warranty started.

Frequently asked questions
How do I add months to a date?
Move the month forward and keep the day of the month: March 15, 2026 plus 2 months is May 15, 2026. If that day doesn't exist in the new month, you land on its last day instead, so August 31, 2026 plus 6 months is February 28, 2027.
What is January 31 plus one month?
February 28, because February has no 31st: January 31, 2026 plus 1 month is February 28, 2026. In a leap year it's February 29 (January 31, 2028 plus 1 month is February 29, 2028). Spreadsheet functions such as Excel's EDATE count the same way.
Is 3 months the same as 90 days?
No. Months have 28 to 31 days, so 3 months is usually 89 to 92 days. From October 27, 2026, 90 days is January 25, 2027, but 3 months is January 27, 2027. If a contract or policy says "90 days", count days; if it says "3 months", count months.
Does the calculator count the start date?
No. The start date is day zero, so adding 1 day to a Monday gives Tuesday, and adding 7 days gives the next Monday. To count how many days a period covers, including both the first and last day, use the days between dates calculator with "Include the end date" turned on.
How do I find out what day of the week a date was?
Enter the date as the start date and leave the years, months, weeks and days empty. The answer shows its weekday: July 4, 1776, for example, was a Thursday. Dates before 1582 use the Gregorian calendar extended backward, as most software does.
How are business days counted?
Only the days part is counted in business days: Saturdays, Sundays and the holidays you choose are skipped, and the start date itself is not counted. So 1 business day after a Friday is the following Monday, or Tuesday when that Monday is a public holiday. Years, months and weeks are added on the calendar first.
What is the ISO week number?
ISO 8601 weeks start on Monday, and week 1 is the week that contains the year's first Thursday. That's why a few days at the edge of a year can belong to the neighboring year: January 1, 2027 falls in week 53 of 2026.
