How hourly pay becomes a salary
A yearly salary is your hourly rate times the hours you're paid for in a year. A full-time week is usually 40 hours, and a year has 52 weeks, so a full-time year is 2,080 hours. That number is why $20 an hour comes out at $41,600 a year, and why dividing a salary by 2,080 gives its hourly rate. If you work 37.5 hours a week, as many office jobs do, use 1,950 hours instead.
Overtime raises the total. Five hours of overtime a week at time and a half count as 7.5 paid hours, so $20 an hour with 5 overtime hours every week is $20 × (40 + 7.5) × 52 = $49,400 a year. If overtime comes and goes, leave it out and use the overtime calculator for the weeks you work extra.

Paid and unpaid time off
Paid vacation, paid holidays and paid sick days don't change your yearly pay: you're paid for those weeks as if you'd worked them. So a job with two weeks of paid vacation at $25 an hour still pays $52,000 a year. Unpaid time is different. If you take two weeks of unpaid leave, or a school or seasonal job leaves you without pay for part of the year, enter those weeks under unpaid weeks off. Two unpaid weeks at $25 an hour bring the year down to $50,000.
Biweekly and twice-monthly paychecks
"Biweekly" and "semi-monthly" are easy to mix up. Biweekly pay comes every other Friday (or another fixed weekday): 26 paychecks a year, and in some years 27, because a year is 52 weeks and one or two days. Semi-monthly pay comes on two fixed dates each month, such as the 15th and the last day: always 24 paychecks. On the same salary, each semi-monthly paycheck is bigger, but you get two fewer of them. Monthly pay is simply the yearly figure divided by 12, so a "monthly" budget built from biweekly paychecks should use 26 ÷ 12, about 2.17 paychecks a month, not 2.
Before tax, not take-home pay
Every figure here is gross pay. What lands in your bank account is lower after federal income tax, state and local income tax in most states, Social Security and Medicare, and any deductions for health insurance or retirement savings. Use the gross numbers to compare job offers, check a paycheck or fill in an application that asks for your annual income.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert an hourly wage to a yearly salary?
Multiply the hourly rate by your hours per week, then by 52 weeks. At $20 an hour and 40 hours a week: $20 × 40 × 52 = $41,600 a year. For a quick estimate, double the hourly rate and add three zeros: $20 an hour is roughly $40,000 a year.
How many working hours are in a year?
For a 40-hour week it is 2,080 hours (40 × 52). A 37.5-hour week gives 1,950 hours and a 35-hour week 1,820. A calendar year actually has 260 to 262 weekdays, so a few employers use 2,088 hours, but 2,080 is the usual figure for converting pay.
Does paid vacation lower my yearly salary?
No. If your vacation days and holidays are paid, you're paid for all 52 weeks, so leave unpaid weeks off at 0. Only count weeks when you get no pay at all, such as unpaid leave or a seasonal layoff.
What's the difference between biweekly and semi-monthly pay?
Biweekly means every two weeks: 26 paychecks a year. Semi-monthly means twice a month, often on the 15th and the last day: 24 paychecks a year. On a $52,000 salary, a biweekly paycheck is $2,000 and a semi-monthly paycheck is $2,166.67 before tax.
Is this before or after tax?
Before tax. These are gross figures. Your take-home pay is lower once federal and state income tax, Social Security and Medicare, and deductions such as health insurance or a 401(k) come out.
How much is $25 an hour a year?
$52,000 a year at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, which is $4,333.33 a month or $2,000 every two weeks before tax. At 37.5 hours a week it is $48,750 a year.
