Four months, give or take

120 days is 17 weeks and 1 day. That's about four months, but usually two or three days short of it, because four calendar months add up to 120 to 123 days. If a document says "120 days", count days; if it says "four months", add months with the date calculator.

Returning a federal student loan

Federal Student Aid lets you cancel all or part of a Direct Loan within 120 days of the date your school disbursed it, by returning the money, and you don't pay interest or the loan fee on the part you return. If your school disbursed the loan on Monday, August 23, 2027, the 120th day is Tuesday, December 21, 2027. Contact your loan servicer well before then: the money has to reach them, and the holiday season slows everything down.

The 120-day foreclosure rule

Under the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's mortgage servicing rules (Regulation X), a servicer generally can't make the first notice or filing for foreclosure until a loan is more than 120 days delinquent, with a few exceptions. If a payment due Monday, March 1, 2027 is missed, 120 days later is Tuesday, June 29, 2027. That time is meant for working things out, such as applying for a loan modification. If you're behind, contact your servicer or a HUD-approved housing counselor early rather than waiting for the deadline.

Business days in 120 days

120 calendar days hold 85 or 86 weekdays, and US federal holidays usually take a few more away. From August 23, 2027, the 120-day span holds 82 business days. Counting 120 business days instead runs all the way to Wednesday, February 16, 2028, nearly six months, because the stretch skips Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
