365 days or one year?
Usually the same, but not across a leap day. 2028 is a leap year, so any 365-day count that runs through February 29, 2028 ends one day before the anniversary. 365 days from Monday, March 1, 2027 is Tuesday, February 29, 2028, while one year from March 1, 2027 is March 1, 2028. A count that doesn't cross February 29, such as from Tuesday, October 27, 2026, gives the same answer both ways: Wednesday, October 27, 2027.
Why next year's date is a weekday later
365 days is 52 weeks and 1 day. So the same date next year falls one weekday later, Tuesday becoming Wednesday, or two weekdays later if a February 29 comes in between. Birthdays, anniversaries and fixed-date holidays drift through the week this way, which is also why a holiday such as Christmas Day falls on a weekend in some years and gets an observed day off.
One-year rules and the day you count
- Long-term capital gains. For US federal tax, an investment held more than one year is long-term. IRS Publication 544 says to start counting the day after you bought it, and the day you sell counts. So shares bought on Friday, January 15, 2027 must be sold on January 16, 2028 or later to qualify. Selling on January 15, 2028, exactly 365 days later, is still short-term.
- Warranties, memberships and subscriptions that run "for one year" usually end on the anniversary. One sold as "365 days" may end a day sooner in a leap year.
- Deadlines of "within one year" in contracts or claims. Courts and agencies have their own counting rules, so check the wording.
A year in business days
A 365-day year holds 260 or 261 weekdays. Take off the 11 US federal holidays and about 250 business days remain. That's why counting 365 business days runs far past a year: from October 27, 2026 it reaches Thursday, April 13, 2028, nearly a year and a half later.
