How to convert a salary to an hourly rate
- 1
Enter your salary and how often it is paid: per year, per month, twice a month, every two weeks or per week.
- 2
Set the hours you actually work each week. In a salaried job that may well be more than 40.
- 3
Add any unpaid weeks, such as the summer break in a school-year contract.
- 4
Read your hourly rate, then compare it at 40 to 60 hours a week to see what long weeks do to it.

Salary to hourly in one step
An hourly rate is your pay divided by the hours it pays for. For a yearly salary at 40 hours a week, divide by 2,080, the hours in 52 forty-hour weeks. For a 37.5-hour week, divide by 1,950. The calculator does the same thing for monthly, twice-monthly, biweekly and weekly pay, after first turning the amount into a year (× 12, × 24, × 26 or × 52).
Here are common salaries at a standard 40-hour week and at 45 hours, which many salaried jobs ask for in practice:
| Yearly salary | Monthly | Hourly at 40 h/week | Hourly at 45 h/week |
|---|---|---|---|
| $30,000 | $2,500.00 | $14.42 | $12.82 |
| $35,000 | $2,916.67 | $16.83 | $14.96 |
| $40,000 | $3,333.33 | $19.23 | $17.09 |
| $45,000 | $3,750.00 | $21.63 | $19.23 |
| $50,000 | $4,166.67 | $24.04 | $21.37 |
| $55,000 | $4,583.33 | $26.44 | $23.50 |
| $60,000 | $5,000.00 | $28.85 | $25.64 |
| $70,000 | $5,833.33 | $33.65 | $29.91 |
| $80,000 | $6,666.67 | $38.46 | $34.19 |
| $90,000 | $7,500.00 | $43.27 | $38.46 |
| $100,000 | $8,333.33 | $48.08 | $42.74 |
| $120,000 | $10,000.00 | $57.69 | $51.28 |
| $150,000 | $12,500.00 | $72.12 | $64.10 |
Comparing a salaried job with an hourly one
Say you're choosing between a salaried offer of $62,000 a year and an hourly job at $28. At first glance the salary looks better: $28 × 2,080 is $58,240. But if the salaried job really takes 45 hours a week, it works out to $62,000 ÷ 2,340 = $26.50 an hour, less than the hourly job. And if the hourly job regularly offers 5 hours of overtime at time and a half, it pays $28 × 47.5 × 52 = $69,160 a year.
Pay per hour is only part of an offer, though. Health insurance, a retirement match, paid time off and how predictable your hours are can be worth thousands of dollars a year. Use the hourly rate to compare the cash on equal terms, then weigh the rest of the package.
Starting from a paycheck
If you only know what's on your pay stub, use the gross pay (before tax and deductions) and pick how often you're paid. "Every two weeks" means 26 paychecks a year; "twice a month" means 24, usually on the 15th and the last day of the month. The difference matters: $2,000 twice a month is $48,000 a year, while $2,000 every two weeks is $52,000.
When the salary doesn't cover the whole year
Some contracts pay for less than a full year of work, like a school-year job or seasonal work. If a contract pays $52,000 for about 42 weeks of work, enter 10 unpaid weeks: the hourly rate becomes $52,000 ÷ (40 × 42) = $30.95, not the $25.00 a full-year job would give. Paid vacation and paid holidays are different: you're paid for those weeks, so leave unpaid weeks at 0.
All figures are before tax. To go the other way, from an hourly wage to a yearly salary, use the hourly to salary calculator. If your salaried job isn't exempt, the overtime calculator shows what your extra hours should pay, and the raise calculator turns a salary raise into a new hourly rate.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a yearly salary to an hourly wage?
Divide the salary by the hours you work in a year. For a 40-hour week that is 2,080 hours (40 × 52), so $50,000 a year is $50,000 ÷ 2,080 = $24.04 an hour. A quick check: halve the salary in thousands, and $50,000 becomes roughly $25 an hour.
What is $60,000 a year per hour?
$28.85 an hour at 40 hours a week, $30.77 at 37.5 hours and $25.64 at 45 hours, all before tax.
How do I turn a monthly salary into an hourly rate?
Multiply the monthly amount by 12 to get the year, then divide by 2,080 for a 40-hour week. $4,000 a month is $48,000 a year, or $23.08 an hour.
How do I work out an hourly rate from a biweekly paycheck?
Divide the gross amount of the paycheck by the hours it covers. For two 40-hour weeks that is 80 hours, so $1,800 every two weeks is $22.50 an hour. Use the gross pay from your pay stub, not the amount after tax.
Should I divide by 2,080 or 2,000?
2,080 is exact for 40 hours a week over 52 weeks. 2,000 is a mental shortcut that assumes 50 paid weeks, as if you had two weeks of unpaid leave. If your vacation is paid, 2,080 gives the true rate.
Do salaried employees get overtime?
It depends on whether the job is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Salaried non-exempt employees are owed time and a half after 40 hours in a workweek. If the salary is meant to cover 40 hours, the regular rate is usually the weekly salary divided by 40. Exempt employees aren't owed overtime.
